Short answer: Longan fruit is a small, sweet fruit with translucent flesh around a dark seed. Fresh longan supplies plenty of vitamin C and some copper. Eat the flesh after removing the shell and seed; use separate nutrition information for dried longan and canned products.
Longan fruit is also called dragon eye fruit because the dark seed shows through the pale flesh. Its botanical name is Dimocarpus longan. It is related to lychee but has its own taste and nutrient profile.
Fresh fruit can be found at Asian grocery stores and specialty produce sellers. Dried longan is another common form, but it isn’t nutritionally interchangeable with the same weight of fresh fruit. Decide which form your meal needs before comparing labels or prices.

USDA’s record doesn’t report total sugars for this fresh entry. That is missing information, not evidence that longan has no sugar. The carbohydrate value is reported and should be included if you track it.
For a smaller weighed portion, scale the values rather than guessing from fruit count. Individual fruit size and the amount of seed and shell vary. A scale measures the part you eat more consistently than counting unpeeled fruit.
If you are preparing a mixed dish, keep the longan calculation separate from the other ingredients. Sweetened milk, juice, syrup or a dessert base changes the meal’s total. The fruit’s numbers can’t describe everything in the bowl.
Health benefits of longan fruit
The best-supported benefits concern nutrients in the edible flesh. Research involving longan flowers, seeds or concentrated extracts answers a different question.
Helps meet vitamin C needs Strong evidence
A 3 oz (85 g) raw portion supplies about 71 mg vitamin C. NIH ODS describes vitamin C as necessary for collagen formation and normal immune function, and as helpful for absorbing nonheme iron from plant foods.
This makes fresh longan a useful vitamin C option. It doesn’t mean it is necessary for good health or that a larger portion delivers extra protection from illness. Other fruits and vegetables can contribute too.
Adds copper for normal body functions Strong evidence
The weighed serving provides about 0.14 mg copper. NIH ODS identifies copper’s roles in making energy, connective tissues and blood vessels, and maintaining the nervous system.
These are established nutrient functions. They don’t establish that longan treats fatigue or a nervous-system condition. A food can contribute to your needs without being a remedy.
Sleep-related claims rely on different experimental materials Limited evidence
A 2024 study tested mixtures of longan, jujube and lettuce extracts in fruit flies and mice. It reported sleep-related effects in those animal models. A mixed extract experiment doesn’t show that eating fresh longan improves sleep in people.
A 2025 study used longan flower extract in cell models and measured inflammatory and sleep-related biochemical pathways. Flowers are a different plant part from the flesh in our table. Cell responses don’t establish a safe or effective food portion for insomnia.
Neither experiment supplies a reason to eat seeds or make an extract at home. If a seller cites longan research, check the material and the subjects before accepting a claim about its product.
Our editorial policy keeps these distinctions visible. Nutrient content, laboratory activity and improvements in a person’s health are separate forms of evidence.
Who should be careful
For normal culinary use, focus on the edible portion, serving texture and any individual food restrictions. Supplements need a separate safety assessment.
Before serving longan
- Seeds and shells: remove them completely. This guide covers the edible flesh and doesn’t recommend medicinal uses of other plant parts.
- Children or swallowing difficulties: the round fruit and hard seed require careful preparation. Remove the seed, cut the flesh appropriately and supervise eating.
- Diabetes: count the carbohydrate in your actual portion. Dried or syrup-packed products need separate calculations.
- Allergy: avoid a known trigger and check ingredients in mixed desserts or drinks.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding or medicines: don’t infer the safety of extracts from ordinary fruit use. Discuss supplement products with your clinician or pharmacist.
NCCIH notes that supplements can interact with medicines and that safety information is often limited for pregnancy and children. A food’s traditional reputation doesn’t answer those product-specific questions.
How to choose fresh longan
Choose mature fruit from a seller who handles it well. University of Florida guidance says longan won’t become sweeter after picking, so don’t buy immature fruit expecting counter ripening.
Ripe fruit has a tan shell, with sweetness as a key maturity indicator. If a seller offers a sample, it can help you judge that batch’s eating quality. Avoid fruit with visible mold, leaks or substantial damage.
Ask when fresh stock arrived and whether the fruit is sold loose or by cluster. Buy an amount you can prepare soon. A small fresh purchase can be more useful than a large quantity bought only because it is unusual.
For packaged products, read the name and ingredient list. A can may contain syrup, and a dried preparation may include additional ingredients. Make the purchase based on what you intend to eat, rather than the picture on the front.
Tip: Plan the first serving before buying. Having a small bowl, a waste container and a use for the prepared flesh makes an unfamiliar fruit easier to enjoy.
How to open and eat longan
Wash the outside, open the shell and remove the seed. Eat only the prepared flesh.
- Wash before opening. FDA recommends running water rather than soap or detergent for produce. Clean your hands and preparation surface too.
- Open carefully. Crack or peel the shell without letting pieces fall into the edible portion.
- Remove the seed fully. Open the flesh enough to see it. Check fruit intended for a shared bowl one piece at a time.
- Prepare for the eater. Cut or modify the flesh as needed for age and chewing ability.
- Portion the flesh. If tracking nutrition, weigh it after removing the discarded parts.
Keep one bowl for flesh and another for shells and seeds. It is a simple way to avoid accidentally mixing a hard seed into a dish. Check again before blending or serving to someone else.
Fresh longan works as a modest fruit serving with a meal. You can also add prepared pieces to plain yogurt or another food you enjoy. Start with a small amount so you can decide whether the combination suits your taste.
These are kitchen suggestions, not tested recipes with calculated totals. If adding sweeteners or combining several fruits, calculate the actual combination rather than using longan’s plain-food entry for the whole dish.
How to store longan
Refrigerate fresh longan and plan to use it soon. University of Florida gives a guideline of five to seven days in plastic bags under refrigeration for home-harvested fruit.
Starting condition matters, especially for fruit that has traveled to a shop. That guideline isn’t a promise of another full week after purchase. Inspect it before preparing it and discard spoiled fruit.
Store prepared flesh covered and cold, with clean utensils. FoodSafety.gov recommends refrigerating perishable foods within two hours, or one hour above 90°F (32°C), and keeping the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below.
For frozen, canned or dried products, follow the package instructions. An unopened shelf-stable package and an opened product can have different storage requirements. Keep the instructions if you decant the contents into another container.
Fresh vs dried longan nutrition
Dried longan is more concentrated by weight because much of the water is removed. USDA provides separate entries; don’t use fresh values for dried fruit.
The following comparison uses about 1 oz (28 g) of each edible form. The portions were calculated from their separate USDA records using the same nutrition script as the main table.
| Nutrient | Fresh | Dried |
|---|---|---|
| Calories. | 17. | 80. |
| Carbohydrate. | 4.2 g. | 21 g. |
| Vitamin C. | 24 mg. | 7.8 mg. |
Equal weight isn’t necessarily the serving you would choose. Weigh the portion that fits your dish and use its matching data. The comparison also doesn’t show the nutrient changes from drying your particular batch, because the records describe separate foods.
If soaking dried longan for a dish, the added water changes the prepared weight. The dry product’s label may still describe the amount before soaking. Keep track of that starting quantity rather than entering the water-swollen weight against a dry-food entry.
Longan vs lychee: how to choose
Choose by taste, freshness and the recipe you are making. They are related, but a preference for one doesn’t require a claim that it is nutritionally superior.
Both need their peel and seed removed for the usual fresh preparation. Use the correct nutrient record for each, and don’t substitute one name in a food log just because the flesh looks similar.
Explore our fruit guides for other choices. An ingredient you can find fresh and prepare confidently is often the best place to start.
Match the form and portion. Fresh fruit, dried fruit and syrup-packed products need different food entries.

Longan fruit FAQ
Why is it called dragon eye fruit?
The dark seed can look like an eye through the translucent flesh. Remove the seed before eating or serving the flesh.
Does a missing sugar number mean it is sugar-free?
No. The raw USDA entry doesn’t provide a total-sugars value. It does report carbohydrate, so don’t treat the missing field as zero.
Will longan sweeten on the counter?
No. University of Florida says the fruit won’t become sweeter after harvest. Choose mature fruit to begin with.
Can dried longan be used as a sleep medicine?
The experiments discussed here don’t establish a sleep treatment or dose for people eating dried fruit. Use it as a food rather than replacing care for persistent sleep trouble.
